Work In Progress // Blogging 101

Hey guys! Myself and my friend Gemma decided to tackle the subject of blogging in our podcast this week. Throughout this podcast, we collected and answered your questions from Facebook and Twitter, on blogging; every subject from how to keep your topics fresh, to how to stay thrifty with your money!

In case this is the first podcast you’ve discovered, here’s a quick run down of our podcasting plan. This is the third instalment of four podcasts that we are creating this month, and they go live every Friday. We’re having a lot of fun doing them, and we love that you guys are listening to them. So far we’ve talked about the magazine that we put together with our University, put together a playlist to showcase our different music tastes, and now we’re onto blogging!

So to avoid me rambling for another 5 minutes, here’s this weeks Work In Progress podcast, Blogging 101.

That’s it for this weeks podcast, thank you so much for listening to it! Next week we’ll be officially kicking off Summer with our final podcast! As it’s our last one, we definitely don’t want you to miss it, so be sure to tune in Friday 1 July, to get ready for Summer 2016.

Another super quick thank you to everyone that sent us questions, and again I’ll give a thanks to Gemma, she puts up with me while I laugh for a solid 3 minutes at the beginning of every podcast recording, before eventually saying “Hey guys!”

How To Blog On A Budget

If you, like me, run a blog, then you can very quickly realise that over time, you might be investing some money in it. Be it paying for a domain, to feeling the need to buy every palette as soon as it’s released, we can very quickly find ourselves needing to save some pennies, while keeping up to date with the blogging world.

So today I thought that I’d write a post with some tips on how to save money, while still producing interesting blog posts!

Be Resourceful | It may be incredibly tempting to buy new products to test and review, but why not review something you already own? Even if you’ve already reviewed it, you can do an updated or empties post!

Follow Up | Following on from my previous point, you don’t need to do reviews, you can simply update previous posts. Anything from a personal post you’ve previously shared, to a wishlist post.

Playlists | Making a sharing a playlist is fun, your followers get to know your tastes, and it’s absolutely free!IMG_7847

Collections | I’ve loved reading and creating posts like these lately. All you have to do it talk us through your existing collections!

Lists & Tips | These posts perform outstandingly well, they are so quick and simple to put together, and once more, they’re free!

Personal | If you feel comfortable doing it, why not get personal with a post? Your readers will enjoy getting to know you better, and it can feel really good to get some things off of your chest.

Reviews | If you are obsessed with writing reviews, and you don’t really want to stray from that, you can try reviewing a movie, book or tv show that you have watched. You don’t need to buy anything new, just tell your readers what you thought about it!

Those are some of my tips for blogging on a budget, I hope you enjoyed this post and it gave you some ideas! Let me know if it did in the comments, and feel free to leave any ideas you have too!

IMG_2263Ad Management

WP125 WP125 offers everything from a one or two column ad display, and includes support. You can also show as many ads as you want, and in any order. One of my favourite things about this particular plugin is that you can keep track of how many times an ad is clicked, and it runs ads for as long as you want, and removes them for you, on the end date.

A Whole Year Of Blogging!

Today is officially one whole year since my very first post!

IMG_0978
My only regret is that the banner does not fill the frame.

I didn’t know what type of post I should do for today, especially as it is a little bonus Saturday post, so instead of rambling on about how happy I am that I stuck with this for a whole year, or about how ridiculously grateful I am to have you guys reading, I figured I would share some blog recommendations!

Obviously I want to shoutout The Girl Gang, as without this awesome community I wouldn’t have met so many awesome supportive people.

So naturally, following on from The Girl Gang I want to give a heck-tonne of blog love to it’s creator, Jemma from Dorkface! She works insanely hard, and is bright and positive the entire time!

Then there’s Charlie from Charlie CP, who runs an absolutely gorgeous blog, and shares my love of all things lilac/lavender and silver. Her pictures are always so gorgeous, and she keeps it super real!

Olivia from Olivia Cheryl is my inspiration for never letting the need to have a ‘niche’ get to you, because if there’s something she wants to write about, she just does it! I also love her openness and honesty.

Here’s Soy enjoying the festivities

Fii from Little Miss Fii is my ultimate go-to for when it comes to Korean beauty, and all-around gorgeous lifestyle and funny posts. I love her style and attitude, she’s an absolute doll.

Holly from The Kitty Luxe has some of the most gorgeous makeup and outfit-inspiration posts that I have ever seen. (Plus her hair is just so pretty, like how does she do that?!)

Rebecca from WavesOfThoughts is single-handedly one of the most positive and supportive bloggers out there, I’ve really enjoyed getting to know her more, she’s just so lovely!

And Corinne from SkinnedCarTree, if you are in need of blogging help, or a super-real-no-holds-barred review, then Corinne is your girl. Her posts are so informative and helpful that she herself is my ultimate guide to this blogging thing. (And yes, we can bond about all of the pros and cons of having our name)

These guys are all so amazing, I would recommend checking out and following their blogs right away! (After all, they did all pay me to say that… jk!)

So here is it is, we all knew it was inevitable, thank you guys so freakin’ much for reading my blog, whether you’ve been here for almost a year now, or if this is the first post you’ve read, I am so grateful that you’re here.

My Blogging Space

I always think it’s interesting to get to see the ‘behind the scenes’ of a blog, getting to know the person and the space that content comes from is just as interesting, if not more, than the content itself. So today I thought I’d give you guys a little insight into my blogging space.deskwhole

Now because my room is themed black, silver and orange, I have a black desk to remain in-keeping with my room. I’ve labelled the things in this image to make it clearer just what I am talking about.

1. I have speakers plugged into my laptop (though they can also be connected to my tablet, phone or any other device with an audio jack) because I really like listening to music when writing, and also just listening to music to relax or get ready. I’m also really into discovering new music and rediscovering music because I’m working on something really fun for you guys that you’ll get to see really soon!

2. Then I have these amazing post-it-notes (with a colourful pen), they are orange, so very fitting, but also a great way of jotting down any ideas I may have in a random moment, or just to remind me of something I have to do. I also have a hand sanitiser here just beside my speakers because I like to keep my keyboard and tablet screen clean.

3. Here I have a special yearbook made by one of my best friends, it’s filled with pictures and memories from mine and all of my best friends’ entire school lives together and I love it immensely. It helps me if ever I’m stuck in a rut, just to flick through and reminisce.

4. Of course, I have my tablet handy on my desk for when my mind strays and I spend a little bit of time mindlessly scrolling through social media. It is also handy to have another screen open for images or prompts when I’m writing.

5. The epitome of my blogging space, my laptop. This is where everything is detailed, planned, roughly outlined, edited, and finally created in it’s final form.

6. I like to have a candle (preferably scented) lit for when I’m sat at my desk for a long time just to keep the atmosphere warm and relaxed. Obviously in this handy little oil burner because it keeps the flame safely tucked away from everything important.

7. I always have either water or tea next to me when I’m writing. Simply because staying hydrated is always important to keep you feeling awake and creative, but also, if you don’t stay hydrated you’ll only end up mindlessly snacking for the entire time you’re sat at your desk.

8. In this little corner I have a picture of my cats when they were kittens, on the very first day I met them, adorable. Fresh flowers whenever I can get them, a cute little book that was given to me by a very loved one, and a little crystal dish for my jewellery, as I’m forever taking rings and bracelets off and on while I’m writing.

That’s everything I usually have in my blogging area, what do you like to have handy for when you’re writing? Let me know in the comments!
