Are Sub Boxes Worthwhile?

I’m sure that we’ve all heard a lot about subscription boxes, whether good or bad, we all know what they are, and it seems like everyone has at least tried one out at some point. Unfortunately, recently all of the reviews I’ve seen surrounding sub boxes have been negative, as the receiver seems to be disappointed with the products included.

I managed to get May’s Birchbox to review, but today I’m also going to be weighing up whether or not I feel that subscription boxes are worthwhile.IMG_7760

Wonder Sponge | The sponge is cruelty free, which is a great aspect, as I think that we are all gradually becoming aware of cruelty and non-cruelty free companies and products, and this is beginning to affect our buying habits. This sponge is just as easy to use as any other sponge or the famous beauty blender, and comes in roughly a pound cheaper. However I do think that this is a product that people either already have, or don’t have it because they prefer using brushes. It’s not necessarily a worthwhile product to ‘try out’ in a sub box. It is also, as Birchbox boast, a full size product, but it would be difficult to dispatch these sponges in smaller, tester size.

Stainiac | I was actually nicely surprised by this lip and cheek tint. The deep blood-red colour of the tube made me weary of trying it, as I thought it’d be far too pigmented, and perhaps sticky and uncomfortable on the face or lips. However when I did try it, it just added a light touch of a pink-red hue to the lips, and dried to the point that I couldn’t even feel it, not sticky or uncomfortable at all. I would probably look into repurchasing this if I wanted a tint.

However, this product showcases how I think sub boxes are misleading. The stated RRP for this product is £10, showcasing that you’re getting a great deal, as the box itself is £12.95. However that RRP is for the 0.3oz stain, and in the box, you get a 0.04oz product. This might sound confusing and like it doesn’t matter, but what it means is that you’re getting 1/12th of the product that is worth that £10. So technically, this product is worth 83p. Or you can get it free as a tester HERE.

Polishing Balm | As I’ve spoken about my love for them before, I was actually really excited to try this out. I was really impressed by the consistency of this product, it isn’t quite a balm, but it is similar in consistency to that of a conditioner. It distributes easily throughout the ends of the hair, and does leave it smelling delicious, while it also smooths down any flyaways and frizz.

However again, the impressive RRP of £18.50 is for the 75ml product, and you receive a 20ml product. So this tester is actually worth £4.93. Although this is again, misleading, I do still find almost £5 worth of product to be impressive.IMG_7755Moisturising Sorbet | It takes some time to work out what this product is for, as it explains that it’s a moisturising sorbet, but it doesn’t say where it is to be applied. Fortunately on the back of the product, underneath the French usage instructions, it says that it’s for the face and neck. It is a somewhat moisturising product, but I found it to be like applying cold water to your face, at first you feel moisturised, but then your face is just wet, not actually moisturised. It took a lot of working this product in for it to completely be absorbed into the skin. I did find that it left an incredibly light and flowery scent, but nothing overpowering at all.

This product is clearly the most expensive included in the box, an insane RRP of £23. I know, more boring maths coming your way, but please bear with me. The product that you receive is actually worth just under £6. Again, this is insane for a 10ml product, so it’s better to have it included in a sub box than it is for you to buy it alone, but I don’t think this is the type of product that anyone is going to fall so madly in love with, that when this tester is empty, they buy the £23 version.

Body Scrub | As I’ve spoken about Rituals recently, you can see my review of their hand cream HERE, you know that I love everything about their products, so when I saw that this body scrub was included in the box, I was pleasantly surprised. Obviously I loved this product, and am impressed to say that you can get 2 uses out of this sized product. I also think that this particular size is good for a tester, as it gives you a good sense of whether or not you want to repurchase the full £19.50 tub version at 325ml.

Ultimately I think that sub boxes are a really good idea, you get to try out new products each month, and you don’t have to shop around for them. However I do think that people can be mislead into think that they are getting more than the box is actually worth, for example, if you took the RRPs as gospel for this Birchbox, you’d think you’re getting £76 worth of products, when in fact you get £19.83. (Assuming you paid for the lip and cheek tint, and didn’t get it free as you can elsewhere.)

Please don’t get me wrong, I’m obviously not just talking about Birchbox here, this is true of all sub boxes. I’m not dismissing the fact that the company need to make a profit, while still paying some companies to feature their products, but I do feel that sub boxes need to be more inventive with what they include. I’ve seen many people complain about receiving toothpaste and clear nail polishes. To me, the key to a good sub box is, getting to try products that you either don’t already have, or wouldn’t buy yourself, either because it’s slightly more luxurious, or a brand you haven’t heard of.

I also am aware that you pay £12.95 a month for these boxes, so even if it is worth £19, you’re still up by £6. But to me, I think that the prices of sub boxes can come down drastically and perhaps feature less, but full sized products. Or the prices can be increased slightly, but you’re guaranteed full sized products, and you can input preferences. (i.e. no toothpastes)

Thank you so much for reading this post, it really means a lot to me as I know it’s really long, but this felt important to me. Also don’t forget that I am daily blogging for this entire month, and you have a brand new podcast series that starts THIS FRIDAY!

Brand Focus: Benefit

I recently realised that I showed you guys my beauty advent calendars at the start of December, but I never gave you guys an update of the products that were included!

So today I thought I’d do another brand focus post, and talk you through the products that I received, and review everything!IMG_1771Total Moisture Facial Cream | This face cream is actually a lot better than I expected it to be. I thought that it’d have a really strong scent, and that as soon as I applied it, it would maybe sting my sensitive skin, and make it so red that I couldn’t use this product. But instead I was pleasantly surprised by a light scent of mango butter, a natural plant-based emollient known to provide moisture, so I didn’t hesitate to put it on my skin, because I knew it would be gentle on it. It left my skin feeling instantly refreshed and highly moisturised.IMG_1772Rockateur Cheek Powder | This cheek powder is a fabulous alternative to both blush and bronzer, because it has both bronzing and peach undertones. You only need a very light swipe of this across the apples of your cheeks, and your complexion is instantly lifted and given a really worthwhile warmth. Benefit describe this product as perfect for giving your skin “a fresh-off-the-stage glow.” Your skin can’t look better than that!

IMG_1774Highlighters

Watts Up! | This highlighter is in my favourite packaging, because I find it so much easier to apply in this twist-up chapstick-style format. The colour itself is a really gorgeous golden champagne, with a lot of shimmer and shine (obviously!). The only thing I found with this particular product (the travel size) is that it takes an awful lot of blending at the edges, to look right. This difficulty obviously doesn’t exist with the full size product because it comes with a proper ‘smudger’ on the other end of the product.

High Beam | This highlighter is my favourite shade of all of Benefits highlighters, because it has a really cool pink undertone, and I find that that shade suits my skin tone best. It is a liquid, so I would recommend using this sparingly, and then blending it out, and gradually applying more if you want a more obvious highlighted look.

Ooh La Lift | This is actually an ‘under-eye brightening’ highlighter, so it’s like a wonderful mix of a concealer and a highlight. As it says itself, its perfect for putting underneath your and in the inner corners of your eyes to really brighten them up and cover any other dark areas you may have, without being overly ‘highlighted’.IMG_1779The Porefessional Primer | I think this is one of Benefits most well known products, it was definitely the first product of theirs that I ever heard about, so I was really excited to give it a try! It’s tinted, but the colour really dissipates once you’ve properly applied it, and I’m really glad to be able to say it’s actually one of the best primers I’ve ever tried. I’ve found that it increases the staying power of both eyeshadows and foundation/concealer for all-day wear. It’s also quite unique because you can apply it under or over your makeup, and I think that’s perfect for those (like me!) that can sometimes forget to apply a base before putting on your makeup.

They’re Real! Remover | I was confused at first by the name of this product, because I was so used to associating this name to the famous mascara, but this is the perfectly formulated remover for that mascara! All you need to do is apply a small amount of this to a cotton pad, and swipe it across your eyes, and it removes all waterproof makeup.IMG_1781Lollitint Lip & Cheek Tint | I have been blown away by the pigment and staying power of this product. When I first tested it, it had the formulation of a lipgloss, so I suspected that when I swiped it away, that it would disappear entirely. But after it had dried and I tried to wipe it off of my hand, it had done just what I least expected, and it had stained my skin a highly pigmented deep pink. I really like this product because it starts out with a consistency similar to a lipgloss, you have some time to apply and play around with it (especially when applying to your cheeks) before it actually settles and stains the skin.

Sugarbomb Lipgloss | Benefit have done it. They have found the perfect formula for a lipgloss that means it’s still a lipgloss, but it’s not sticky, so that’s already an insane pro to this product. This particular lipgloss actually contains some plumping qualities, so at first it does leave a tingly sensation on your lips, but after that, it is a really subtle pink-toned nude lipgloss.

Hoola Lipgloss | This lipgloss is similar to Sugarbomb, but it’s not plumping, and it’s a slightly darker nude shade, which makes it so much more suitable for all skin tones. Again, it’s not sticky, so it’s really nice to wear.

IMG_1786Mascaras

Bad Gal Lash | I really like this mascara for when I’m applying it to both my top and botton lashes, because of the brush applicator, it’s easily buildable and it does take a few coats to get a really exaggerated lash look. So it’s perfect for building up the length and volume of your top lashes, while keeping it pretty and natural on the bottom.

They’re Real! | Possibly one of the most famous mascaras on the market, and I completely understand why. With just one coat, you’ve got an immediate false-lash effect. I don’t like applying this mascara to my lower lashes because the plastic applicator means it can tend to make them look spidery and transfer onto the underneath of my eyes, but other than that, this mascara is perfect for a quick false-lash look.

And that’s it for what was included in Benefit’s advent calendar, I hope you guys enjoyed this post!

Have you tried any products from Benefit before? What’s your fave?

Makeup Bag Staples

For those of us that like to wear makeup, we can quickly see that there are certain products we like to keep at hand throughout the day. So today I’m sharing with you guys my favourite makeup bag staples.Fotor0819173550

First things first, obviously a compact is a really handy thing to have in your makeup bag, otherwise carrying any additional products is entirely useless. I like to have a double compact, meaning there is a regular mirror and a magnified side.

The next staple is a moisturiser. If you suffer from dry skin, then it really helps to improve it if you regularly moisturise throughout the day. It also helps your makeup sit better on your skin, and give it a much higher lasting power.

For me, I also like to always have a pair of tweezers on me, if not for any last minute brow checks for yourself, then it’s always handy to lend to a friend if they are in need.

Naturally after tweezers, the next product is whatever you use for filling in your brows. I use a brow pencil, as it’s handy and easily portable.DSCN1993 (2)

A further product that I can’t even imagine leaving the house without is a chapstick. I’ve been obsessed with Babylips since I first picked up one to try out. Lately I picked up this lightly tinted one to add a little bit of colour to the lips, while also moisturising them.

Next I also like to have a natural lip look ready in my makeup bag, so I like to carry a pink lipliner along with a corresponding lipstick. My favourites are Rimmel’s Exagerrate lipliner in ‘Eastend Snob’ and Lancôme’s L’absolu Rouge in #06 ‘Rose Nu’ which I have previously spoken about in my favourites.

Finally, for the eyes I also like to always have a neutral eye look handy in my makeup bag, so I’ll always have a neutral toned eyeshadow palette on me, lately I’ve been loving Makeup Academy’s Heaven & Earth eyeshadow palette, as it covers a lot of neutral and pretty looks.DSCN1992 (2)

I can’t leave out eyeliner, so I’ve always got a felt liner on me, and once again recently I stumbled upon Collection’s Extreme 24 hour eyeliner, and it hasn’t left my side since. I also like to have my mascara on me just in case I need to touch it up during the day.

Obviously there are certain other tools that are always good to have handy, for me it’s an eyelash curler, travel brush, a hair tie and some bobby pins.

That’s it for today! What products can you guys not leave the house without? Let me know in the comments!

March Favourites

It’s that time again and I know everyone says it, but I cannot believe how quickly this year is going already. So without further ado, here are some of the things that I have been thoroughly loving this month!

bath and hairspray

Lush’s Dragon’s EggThis is hands down, one of my favourite products that Lush do. It’s one of my favourites on account of many reasons, firstly, just to look at it, you’d assume it looks quite simple and maybe even a bit boring. But when it meets your bath; that’s when the true magic unveils itself. This bath bomb actually turns your bath water gold, and on top of all of that magic, it smells amazing, and if you don’t want to put the whole thing in your bath, you can split it and get two amazing baths out of it!

Radox’s Unwind Bath SoakAs you may be able to tell, I’ve really been enjoying a good bath recently, and nothing makes a bath more relaxing than bubbles. This product is almost always on some kind of deal, so I’d really recommend picking up some and giving it a try. They come in various types of ‘soak’ and you can select whichever one you feel that you’re craving, for example, ‘Muscle Therapy’, ‘Moisture Soak’ and ‘Nourish’. I’ve been loving ‘Unwind’ because it has a really deep, relaxing smell and it turns your bath water into a pure blue. Perfect for at the end of a long day or whenever you’re feeling a bit tense.

Salon Professional’s Extra Hold Hairspray | I have actually been loving this product for months. It does exactly what it says on the tin, providing extra hold for any style that you may choose. It prevents fly aways, and keeps your style in place all day. It’s not sticky, and something that never seems to come into the game of hairspray; it smells amazing. It doesn’t leave you choking on any fumes and it actually leaves your hair smelling amazing.

headphones

Frends Layla HeadphonesI’ve been after these headphones for a couple of months, and this month, I found them on offer by Urban Outfitters, so I grabbed them. I absolutely adore these headphones because they aren’t huge, like most headphones, instead they are really small (perfect for people with small heads and ears such as myself). They have a really beautiful design, and are quite cute and girly, the perfect overhead headphones for me. Frends actually designed these with jewellery in mind, not only keeping the design pretty, while still delivery outstanding quality music, they are small enough to not press down on your ears if you are wearing earrings. They also come with this very handy case that makes them even easier to slip into your bag, and prevents the cables from tangling.

kitty and socks

This one is a little bit of fun, because he is really handsome and special. Here is Puss in Boots, entirely hand knitted by grandmother for me! If you, like me, think he’s handsome, let me know in the comments below and I’ll let my grandmother know!

New Look’s Floral SocksSince Spring has sprung, I’ve been slowly fading out all of the dark block colours, and bring in lighter colours and florals. These socks are a perfect in between because they can work at any time of year, but right now they’re perfect for wearing with heels or shoes with cut outs in them, so you can show off the daisies. And on top of all of that, they have an adorable frilled edge.

nivea and hairmask

Oz Botanic’s Major Moisture Deep ConditionerI mentioned this product in my Ombre Hair Care Routine, and it really is amazing. It has revived the ends of my hair, and leaves my hair soft, shiny and manageable! And as I’m sure I mentioned before, it smells good too, unlike most other deep conditioners that are more expensive, they do the trick but they don’t smell as lovely.

Nivea Creme | This moisturiser is such a staple for me, I always have it on me and it really is a miracle in a pot. There are no added colours or scents, so it’s amazing on sensitive skin, and it’s quite thick so it lasts you all day, and you don’t need to apply a lot; in this case, a little really goes a long way. They are also available in handy tiny pots that would fit right in your handbag or make-up bag, perfect for on the go.

Those are some of the things that I’ve been loving this month, let me know what you’ve been loving, whether it’s something you’ve always loved and used or if it’s something that you’ve newly discovered, I’d love to know!
